Upcycling Fashion Store
On one of my very first exploring missions around Berlin last year I stumbled upon a sign attached to a bike on the street corner advertising, ‘The Upcycling Fashion Store’. After walking around in the cold this seemed worth a look, if only for the opportunity to warm up my hands! What I found was my first hint that Berlin had exciting possibilities as well as a little gem of a shop.

As with the subject of Ethical Fashion, to most people Upcycling requires some level of explanation. I see it as adding value to an existing thing. This might be anything from using end of roll fabrics to a box of swatches thrown out by a large fashion retail organisation or to re-purposing men’s shirts into Westwood-inspired tops and dresses.
Following time spent working at From Somewhere in London Carina and her dedicated friends Luisa, Ari and Jon returned to Berlin to set up the shop to introduce the concept of upcycling to the discerning Mitte crowd, where despite a significantly higher awareness there is very little else out there covering this area of the market. The team created themselves not only an opportunity for their own slow fashion shirting label Aluc which feature detachable interchangeable collars but also a platform to support new and innovative labels that fit with the upcycling message. They select the best slow fashion has to offer, stocking innovative brands such as Globe Hope, Mija t Rosa and Milk allowing the customer to easily integrate sustainability into their wardrobe.

As Ambassadors for sustainability in fashion across Europe the Upcycling team show case their work at events such as The Ethical Fashion Show at Berlin Fashion week where Carina has taken part in panel discussions sharing her experiences, they also support up and coming graduate designers through “Upcycling Talent” showcase opportunities in store.
For a young team the experience, commitment and passion they put into the business is impressive. I can see that there are many more avenues to pursue for these guys in the future starting with a brand new shop at Anklamer Strasse which opened this month.
